A three-year programme was begun in 2007 to develop a method for assessing the competitive potential of wheat varieties with respect to weeds and to encourage the adoption of this criterion in selection programmes. The first year of experiments made it possible to identify the most explanatory characteristics of the competitive potential of wheat (using Italian ryegrass to simulate weeds): height first, followed by ground cover and leaf habit. These factors are nevertheless not adequate for totally predicting the competitive potential of wheat varieties and, in particular, intermediate varieties for which wide variations were observed from one situation to another in our experiments. We are now waiting for the results of two additional years of experiments. |

Stagonospora nodorum glume blotch (SNG), caused by the necrotrophic fungus Stagonospora nodorum, is one of the economically important diseases of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Resistance to SNG is known to be quantitative and previous studies of a recombinant inbred line (RIL) population identified a major quantitative trait locus (QTL) for resistance to SNG on the short arm of chromosome 3B. To localize this QTL (QSng.sfr-3BS) with high resolution, we constructed a genetic map for the QTL target region using information from sequenced flow-sorted chromosomes 3B of the two parental cultivars ‘Arina’ and ‘Forno’, the physical map of chromosome 3B of cultivar ‘Chinese Spring’ and BAC-clone sequences. The mapping population of near-isogenic lines (NIL)... |

Selection of cereal varieties suited to organic farming requires a different, but complementary, approach to that used when developing cereals for conventional high input systems. Selection is based on the interaction between a series of desirable plant and crop characteristics, in particular competitive ability against weeds. Certain key characteristics that are generically desirable for organic cereal varieties include: (1 good establishment ability, (2) high tillering ability, (3) increasing plant height, (4) planophile leaf habit, (5) high leaf index and (6) robustnesses in yield performance across sites. Our data strongly suggest that high crop ground cover is the most important feature for creating a highly competitive crop that also has consistency... |

Hybrid breeding utilizes the advantages characterizing F1 plants in a targeted manner: Vigour, uniformity, and a combination of all dominant traits of the parental lines. It gives breeders secure licences, as farmers can not save seed from hybrid varieties with a view to replanting. Regarding rye, the current advantages of hybrid varieties are primarily the higher yields but also improved resistances to lodging and sprouting. However, farmers can only benefit from higher yields if the limited market for organic rye in Switzerland can be expanded. The currently available hybrid rye varieties have higher susceptibility to leaf rust and ergot infections. The criticism of hybrid breeding and hybrid varieties concerns four areas: Firstly, the area of... |

Organic farming systems, characterized by special attention to soil fertility, recycling techniques and low external inputs, gained increased significance in recent years. As a consequence, there is a growing demand for varieties adapted to organic and/or low input farming. The objectives of the present study were to (i) compare the testcross performance of segregating maize (Zea mays) populations under established organic (OF) and conventional farming (CF) systems, (ii) determine quantitative genetic parameters decisive for the selection response under OF vs CF conditions, and (iii) draw conclusions for breeding new varieties optimally adapted to OF. Testcross performance of four different material groups of preselected lines (90 lines per group) derived... |

Legumes are able to improve soil fertility via a mutualistic symbiosis with nitrogen-fixing rhizobacteria. Therefore, they represent ecologically important crops for sustainable farming systems. Besides their ecological function, grain legumes considerably contribute to the dietary protein N needs of humans (Graham and Vance 2003). Despite their importance, legume cultivation remains low due to low and unstable yields (Rubiales and Mikic 2015). Soil fatigue, also called legume yield depression syndrome, is caused by a complex of different soil-borne pathogens and thought to be the main reason for these yield losses, especially in pea (Pisum sativum) (Fuchs et al. 2014). The overall goal of this project is to improve the resistance of pea against... |

While grain legumes can be regarded as highly valuable protein sources for animal nutrition, ceratin drawbacks inhibit their use as sole foodstuff for livestock. The nutrient quality is reduced by low concentrations of tryptophan and sulfur amino acids. |

Increasing yield instability due to climate change could be mitigated by higher interand intra crop diversity. During the course of the INSUSFAR project, several questions regarding the impact of more diverse crops on agricultural systems are adressed. To answer these questions, varieties, mixtures, and composite cross populations of wheat will be investigated in field experiments and on-farm. Based on the results, the socio-economic, ecological and yield performance of these varieties and the extent of genetic changes in genetically diverse populations will be tested. In addition, effects of plant breeding on the adaption of varieties to different input levels will be analysed. |
